Death of a Dog
Then Saying Good Bye 'Old Friend'
Saying Good Bye to Your Dog
A veterinarian had been called to examine an old Black Lab named Doc. The dog's owners/family,
Mom, Dad, and their 4 year old son were all very attached to Doc and they were hoping for a
miracle.
The Vet examined Doc and found he was dying of cancer. He told the family there were no miracles
left for Doc, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As they made arrangements the parents thought it would be good for the four year old son to
observe the procedure. They felt as though the boy might learn something from the experience.
The next day, the vet felt the familiar catch in his throat as Doc's family surrounded him. The
boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time. The vet wondered if he understood what
was going on. Within a few minutes, Doc slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to
accept Doc's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
They all sat together for a while after Doc's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal
lives are shorter than human lives. The boy, who had been listening quietly, piped up saying
he knew why.
Startled, the adults all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned them. They
had never heard a more comforting explanation.
The boy said, people are born so that they can learn how to live a good life...like loving
everybody all the time and being nice, right? The four year old continued, Well, dogs already
know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply, Speak kindly.
